About NAPROC-13

What is NAPROC-13?

NAPROC-13 is a specialised 13C NMR database of natural products, developed at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Salamanca. Its goal is to provide the scientific community with a powerful, freely accessible tool for the identification and structural characterisation of natural compounds.

Natural products — compounds produced by living organisms such as plants, fungi or bacteria — are the source of some of the most important medicines in history. Correctly identifying and characterising them is the first step towards understanding their biological activity and therapeutic potential.

What is 13C NMR?

Carbon-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C NMR) is a spectroscopic technique that provides detailed information about the carbon skeleton of a molecule. Each carbon atom in a different chemical environment produces a characteristic signal — called a chemical shift — that acts as a molecular fingerprint.

Unlike other techniques, 13C NMR does not destroy the sample, is highly reproducible and provides unique structural information. NAPROC-13 brings together thousands of these spectra on a single search platform.

Search tools

01 — Name

Search compounds directly by their full or partial chemical name.

02 — Substructure

Draw or enter a structural fragment and find all compounds that contain it.

03 — Chemical Shift

Enter the 13C chemical shift values from your spectrum and get the most compatible compounds.

04 — Carbon type

Filter by carbon multiplicity: C, CH, CH₂ or CH₃.

Project history

~2000 The Pharmacognosy group at the USAL Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences begins compiling 13C NMR data of natural products, aiming to create a specialised open-access database.
2010 NAPROC-13 becomes an internet-accessible tool, allowing researchers worldwide to query the data without local installation.
2020 New search tools are incorporated and the database surpasses 8,000 registered compounds with their spectroscopic data.
Today The platform continues to grow with new molecules, multilingual support and a redesigned interface.
